The Day the River Spoke (Kamala Nair) — Jahnavi, nearly ten, has never been sent to school. A talking River listens to her, tells her that little girls can do as much as little boys, and pushes her to walk into the classroom herself. She does, and the teacher persuades her father. Try Again (Eliza Cook) — King Bruce of Scotland, ready to give up, watches a spider fall eight times and climb a ninth. 'He conquered, and why shouldn't I?' The poem is a narrative poem in ABAB rhyme about perseverance. Three Days to See (Helen Keller) — Blind and deaf, Keller imagines being given sight for three days: day one for the people she loves, day two for dawn and the museums, day three for the everyday city. Her advice: use each sense as if you would lose it tomorrow. Grammar in the unit: nouns and pers
