Tip for a gap-fill listening task: read the paragraph before the audio starts and decide what part of speech each blank needs. Blank 1 follows “a shape that is”, so it wants adjectives; blank 2 follows “making stone”, so it wants a plural noun; blank 3 follows “some of the most”, so it wants adjectives again. Knowing the shape of the answer means you only have to catch two or three words, not the whole sentence.

The three that are not steps:

  • 4. leave the statue in water to firm up overnight — water is never mentioned. This is a distractor borrowed from clay work, not stone.
  • 7. begin carving from the centre — the speaker says the sculptor begins by removing large unwanted portions, that is, from the outside inwards. The opposite of what this option claims.
  • 2. set up the different tools — the tempting one. The transcript does mention tools: “Different tools are used to do this.” But that is a remark about how the shaping is done, not a separate stage of the process, and ‘set up’ is never said. Listen for what is presented as a step in the sequence, not merely for a word you recognise.
Why this task is really a comprehension task: in a “select six out of nine” item the wrong options are usually built from words that do occur in the audio, rearranged into a claim that does not. Option 7 flips a direction; option 2 promotes a passing detail into a step. Match the whole statement, not the keyword.
