Why were rivers important in the growth of early civilisations?
Answer
Because a river supplies, in one place, every physical requirement of a large settled population — and the chapter's own evidence for this is that all four of the world's early civilisations grew in river plains, independently of one another:

Six things a river gives, in the chapter's own examples:
- Fertile soil, renewed every year. The Nile flood deposited rich black mud so reliably that the Egyptians named their country after it — Kemet, 'the black'. A field beside a flooding river does not need to be abandoned when it tires; the river re-fertilises it.
- Water for irrigation. The Sumerians were 'the first to build a system of dams and canals'; about 5000 years ago Egyptian farmers 'discovered that by digging ditches they could divert water from the Nile into their fields and store water in reservoirs'; the Early Harappans built gabarbands — check dams across small streams — and later the great interconnected tanks at Dholavira.
- Surplus, and therefore cities. Irrigated alluvium produces more food than the farmers eat. That surplus is what feeds potters, bead-makers, metalworkers, priests and officials — the specialists who make a city a city.
- Transport. Bulk goods move on water long before they move by land. The Sumerians invented the sailboat; the Harappans built the burnt-brick dockyard at Lothal.
- Building material. River mud is brick. The Sumerians were 'the first to use mud bricks and burnt bricks'; Mehrgarh's houses were sun-dried brick; Dholavira's tanks were stone and mud-brick.
- A reason to organise — this is the subtlest one. The chapter says that digging ditches and building dams 'required collective effort. These early cooperative efforts must have led to the growth of local government, accompanied by the rise of the administrative class.' A river does not only feed people; managing it forces them to organise, and the organisation becomes the state.
And rivers also gave a calendar. The Egyptians developed their year 'by counting the days between Nile floods' — 365 days, twelve months of thirty plus five extra — and named their three seasons after what the river was doing: Inundation, Peret (growing), shemu (harvest). The river set the working year, so it also set the way time itself was measured.
Keep the other half in view. Question 8 of Questions and activities asks about the disadvantages, and they are real: a flood that comes too high destroys the same fields it usually feeds, and settlements crowded along one channel are all exposed to the same disaster at the same time. The chapter itself lists 'environmental degradation, pressure on agricultural lands' among the causes of Babylonia's decline.
