If you visualise the maps of the Indian subcontinent of the second and first millennium BCE, you will find more settlements concentrated in the Ganga region in the latter map. Archaeological findings from this region during the first millennium BCE provide increasing evidence of the use of iron implements, a wider variety of grain, and the characteristic PGW pottery. Further, in the second half of the first millennium BCE, particularly in the middle Ganga region (from present-day Prayagraj to eastern Bihar), there is evidence of a refined ‘deluxe ware’ called NBPW, known for its smooth, glossy black surface. Archaeologically, this phase marks the emergence of a richer, more advanced material culture. Literary sources from this period also contain numerous references to expanding agricultural activities, increased grain output, greater crop variety—particularly paddy—and the use of iron implements. Can you identify the crucial factors behind this change?

The crucial factor is iron — and what iron did to agriculture in the particular soil and climate of the Ganga plains. Everything else in the box follows from that.

Read the box as a chain of cause and effect:

The factors, named:

  • Iron technology. Fig. 5.3 maps the finds and separates two kinds of site — early finds of iron (Gandhara Caves, Pirak, Jakhera, Dadupur, Lahuradeva, Malhar, Raja-Nal-Ka-Tila, Ahar, Nagda, Naikund, Watgal, Hire Benakal, Hallur, Mangadu) and megalithic sites (Burzahom, Deodhoora, Nartiang, Nangbah, Birbir, Chaibasa, Mahurjhari, Maski, Kadambapur, Nagarjunakonda, Brahmagiri, Marayur, Pudukkottai, Adichanallur). Iron is not a Ganga monopoly — it is found from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu — but it is in the Ganga plains that it combines with the next factor.
  • The fertility and water of the Ganga plains. The wide, well-watered alluvial plain suited paddy, which the box singles out, and paddy gives a high yield per unit of land.
  • A food surplus, and the specialisation it allows. NBPW is the archaeological signature of this: a 'deluxe ware' exists only where some people can afford things beyond necessity.
  • Larger, more settled communities. The chapter says the region saw substantial growth in agriculture, the formation of larger political units, and more complex social institutions by about 600 BCE.
Why the two kinds of evidence together are so convincing: archaeology and literature are independent of each other. The excavated iron tools, grain remains and pottery were buried and forgotten; the literary references were composed, recited and copied. Neither could have been shaped to agree with the other — and yet both describe the same thing: more iron, more grain, more kinds of grain. When two independent sources point the same way, a historian can state the conclusion with confidence.
Where the Magadha story starts: this is the material background to the next section. Among the sixteen mahājanapadas, Magadha — in present-day Bihar, right in the middle Ganga region the box describes — became the most powerful, because of its strategic location, fertile plains and strong rulers. Its expansion eventually led to the rise of the Mauryan Empire.
