I. You will listen to a young girl describe her school garden. As you listen identify which of the following 1–3, she does not talk about. (Transcript for teacher on page 264) [Three pictures on page 93, each set against a green hedge: 1. a wooden garden bench; 2. a garden tap with a coiled green watering hose lying on the ground, water running from its nozzle; 3. three butterflies — pink, blue and mauve.]

Tip for a ‘which is NOT mentioned’ task: the two items that are mentioned usually appear at opposite ends of the talk — the butterflies come in the second paragraph, the bench in the second-last. So do not stop listening the moment you tick one off. Keep all three pictures in front of you and cross out only when you actually hear it.

Why items 1, 2 and 3 are the ones students lose: in each case the recording gives you all three options — three flower colours, three flower types, and both left and right corners — but attached to different things. The task is not to hear the word; it is to hear which word goes with which position. Listening for “pink” alone will not help, because “white” and “red” are also said. Listen for the phrase “the first row” and take whatever follows it.
Tip: before the second listening, underline the identifying phrase in each statement — first row, second row, useful plants, evergreen, bricks, centre, waste material. Those seven phrases, not the options, are what you are listening for.
