Why were human beings so fond of using circular shapes? Was this only for practical reasons, or could there have been other reasons too? What kinds of uses have human beings found for the circular shape?

Both. The circle is the most efficient shape there is, and it is also the shape people have found most meaningful.
Practical reasons.
- It encloses the most area for a given perimeter. A circular hut wall of a given length of mud or thatch surrounds more floor than any other shape — the isoperimetric property. The same reasoning applies to a circular granary or a village boundary wall.
- It is the easiest shape to lay out. A peg, a rope and a stick are enough. No measuring, no right angles, no surveying instrument — which is why circular plans appear in every early culture independently.
- It rolls. Every point of the rim is the same distance from the centre, so a wheel on an axle keeps a constant height. Pottery wheels, cart wheels, grindstones and pulleys all depend on this one property.
- It has no corners to weaken or to lose heat from, and pressure from any direction is shared equally around it. Hence circular wells, arches, pots and tent walls.
Other reasons.
- What the sky shows. The Sun and the full Moon are discs, the horizon is a circle, and the stars turn in circles. Circular symbols follow.
- Symmetry and equality. A circle looks the same from every direction and has no "head" of the table. A ring of people seated to talk, a circle for garba or bihu, a rangoli, a chakra, a maṇḍala — the shape itself expresses that no position is privileged.
Why it happens: the practical and the symbolic reasons are the same mathematics seen twice. Both come from the circle's defining property — every point of it is at the same distance from the centre. That single fact produces the maximum enclosed area, the constant rolling height, the equal sharing of stress, and the perfect rotational symmetry that people read as balance and completeness.
